I walked in from the sidelines to a musical crescendo from the Sinatra version of Ebb Tide. Projected clips of rolling seas and ocean swells shone onto the drapes behind me. I swished my long taffeta skirt, and the audince asked for more.
The lights were low, but thanks to a borrowed lamp, the guests could see my face, read my expressions, vibe with me.
I have loved performing in front of people from the age of 3. Most of my audiences have been sympathetic. Sunday school assemblies, acting classes, and community theater groups always root for you. The dear hearts and gentle people who showed up for my celebration brought an exceptional level of love and support. It tasted better than whipped cream.
Then, a single note signaled the start of the Karaoke arrangement for the Righteous Brothers version, followed by The Lady Is a Tramp, Thou Swell, and Blue Bayou. I pattered on for a bit about that time in my life when I was finding a new sense of self, then Darcey and I sang My Heretic Heart.
Then it was time for First We Take Manhattan. I introduced the song, talking about my commitment to the nonviolent revolution of love and consciousness. A line in the lyrics speaks of ‘the beauty of our weapons,.’ What would be they be, but writing, cinema, art, and gatherings like this one.
Our numbers were small compared to the eight billion people on Earth, but the strength of our solidarity was unshakeable. I felt buoyed by the love of every person in the room, not me alone as an individual, but me as a commitment to a win/win world led by Heart Power.
It took a few days to drink in the reality. For at least the length of that song, a hand-picked group of people aligned with me—fully, in heart, mind, and spirit. It left me with a sense of validation I’ve been seeking since birth.
To those of you who were there, please accept my gratitude. You were part of a major breakthrough. For those reading this and sending your juju to add to the power you sense by reading about this happening, please join me in the quest for a win/win world. We’re just getting started.
